Behind the Scenes: Operation Dollhouse

Lonny_dollhouse_1
Two weeks ago during a photo shoot, Ellie and I received a phone call and were instructed to come downstairs. To our surprise, we were greeted by a camera crew from the new interiors website Curbed, and were handed our latest challenge:  assemble and decorate a dollhouse in exactly one week!  Flattered to be included with publications such as Martha Stewart Living, Elle Decor, House Beautiful etc., but worried we wouldn't have time to design a dollhouse in the midst of closing our October issue, we raced back to the Lonny offices and got to work!  Many sleepless nights, trips to the craft store, flea market and FAO Schwartz later, here's what our team came up with... (and to see us on Curbed, click here!)

Entry way: I wanted a dramatic Dorothy Draper-esque entrance so we lacquered the front door, printed black and white striped wallpaper and added a reflective pendant lamp (i.e. Christmas ornament from the flea market!)  We then printed one of my favorite Slim Aarons photos to place above our lucite table, which we "plexi-mounted" using wood and an acetate sheet.

Living room: So much fun!  We started by printing a miniature scale of my Rubie Green East Village fabric, and attached it to one of the dollhouse chairs that we received from Curbed!  (Lacquered white of course, to make it more modern).  Then I sourced more furniture. I wanted the look to be modern but not specific to one time period, so I paired a Barcelona bench with a hollywood regency cabinet (which we painted), our federal chair, and a cool lucite lounger.  The sunburst mirror above the fireplace is one of my favorite features- it's a vintage earring from the flea market that I glued a mirror to!  Lastly, I added a piece of art by Robert Longo that I actually own in real life and adore, and a miniature version of a Marilyn Monroe book that I recently bought on eBay, after spotting it in Eddie and Jaithan's home.  The walls were painted in Benjamin Moore Gray Cloud (same color that we have here in our office!) and the finishing touch was a mini mug with my name on it that I stumbled upon at the flea market...!  How creepy is that?!

Bedroom: To keep the room feeling feminine, I added "wall to wall carpet" using leftover seagrass wallpaper from home.  The main wall is papered in classic Albert Hadley "Fireworks," and the headboard and bedskirt are made from a malachite paper. Bedside sconces were created using a pair of my earrings, and we lacquered a dresser white and propped a photo on it that Pat recently snapped in Capri!

Here's what we were given...
