In Memoriam

The staff of Lonny is saddened by the loss of Albert Hadley, a landmark designer of the 20th century. In 2010, we were honored to have the chance to meet and work with Mr. Hadley. Photographing his elegant Upper East Side apartment remains a high point in the life of this publication. A true gentleman and artist, Mr. Hadley will be greatly missed.

I'm tremendously proud of our gorgeous new issue of Lonny, and it was also my great pleasure to appear last Sunday on NBC's "Open House New York," offering tips on decorating your home with family history without getting stuck in the past. We're so proud of Lonny's very own Robert Leleux, who published his second book today, The Living End: a Memoir of Forgetting and Forgiving.  Hailed as "one of the best prose stylists in America" by Pat Conroy, author of The Prince of Tides and South of Broad, Robert is well on his way to literary fame.  "Though it's a difficult and painful topic," Leleux says, "I'm excited to share my family's story. For us, forgiving and forgetting were more than usually intertwined, in the last few years." check it out here or catch robert on his book tour

As the weather gets dreary here in New York, we find ourselves letting the mind wander to warmer climates. Enter The Saguaro, a newly opened hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona, that provides the perfect backdrop for our imaginary travels. Designed by Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat of Stamberg Aferiat Architecture, the hotel is a desert oasis, a vibrant escape set dramatically against the beiges and sands of Old Town Scottsdale. The design is meant to channel the palette of 12 indigenous wildflowers of Arizona, which both grounds the hotel and sets it apart from the landscape.

Although Frank Auerbach frequently traveled in the same postwar artistic circles as figurative painters Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and John Minton, his own figurative work often exudes a different sort of emotional intensity. With his thick application of paint and overloaded surfaces, Auerbach tends to obscure his subjects with harried brushstrokes as a way of visually expressing the distressed inner workings of their minds. One of the most celebrated contemporary British artists, Auerbach creates works that are at once moving and thought provoking.
